TiVo Bolt Vox DVR
With the passage of time, TiVo becomes harder to love. The cable DVRs for which TiVo acts as an alternative are increasingly sophisticated, with modern interfaces, voice search and integrated streaming apps. Even the renunciation of cable is becoming easier, thanks to the proliferation of streaming services and new over-the-air DVR solutions. The TiVo consumer hardware business is squeezed from both directions.
TiVo Bolt Vox is an attempt to repel. Like the existing TiVo Bolt, Vox acts as a DVR for cable subscribers or a way to record over-the-air channels free of an antenna. Its main addition is a new remote with voice search, and comes with a long-awaited review of the software. (Existing TiVo Bolt and Roamio holders can upgrade to the new software for free and purchase the voice remote for $ 45.)But while TiVo’s recording capabilities are still second-to-none, and its integration with streaming services is still a brilliant idea, the addition of Bolt Vox is just the card for the platform and TiVo app hardware. Despite the new software and the vocal search, using TiVo Bolt Vox still seems to go back in a bygone era.
Hardware: Only the Remote Control is New
TiVo Bolt Vox has the same design as the old Bolt, with a rectangular casing that arches upwards on one side. On the back, there is a coaxial input, HDMI output, optical audio output, 3.5mm audio jack, e-SATA storage port and two USB ports. (USB ports do not support external storage of the DVR, and the only e-SATA drive that works with TiVo sells at a huge profit margin.) A hatch under the Bolt Vox houses a CableCARD slot.
TiVo is selling three versions of Bolt Vox. Both the 500GB and 1TB models have four tuners and cost $ 200 and $ 300 respectively. The 3 TB model has 6 tuners for $ 500, but only works with cable transmissions, not over the air.
In all cases, TiVo charges $ 15 a month or $ 150 a year for the DVR service. There is also a lifetime service option for $ 550, which is at the top of the hardware cost.
If you want to use TiVo as a whole home DVR, you will need TiVo Mini or Mini Vox satellite units, which cost $ 150 and $ 180 respectively. The latter comes with the same remote voice as Bolt Vox and supports 4K video. Tivo Bolt Vox is able to broadcast live streaming and TV on iOS and Android devices at no additional cost. (There is also a beta app for Fire TV devices, although it has not been updated in two years and only works with registered programs.)
One thing you’ll notice with TiVo Bolt Vox, at least if it’s outdoors, is that it keeps buzzing. Noise emanates from the unit regardless of whether it is in recording or not, regardless of whether the TV is switched on or off and strangely even when TiVo is in standby. It’s not a major nuisance, especially from 10 feet away, but it’s a reminder of how boxes and sliding sticks without a fan are compared.
The same could be said of the TiVo Bolt Vox remote control, which remains a heavy instrument loaded with buttons, some of which are rarely pressed. The main differences compared to the normal Bolt remote control are the new voice search button (we’ll talk about it later), a Netflix button and a dedicated button for the existing TiVo ad jump feature. Cable subscribers will probably feel at home with the installation; but again, those who are used to streaming players like Roku and Apple TV can retreat for remote chunkiness.
The software progresses
The biggest new feature of Tivo Bolt Vox is its software, previously referred to as “Hydra” code and now known only as the new user interface. It is preloaded on Bolt Vox, but existing TiVo owners also have the ability to upgrade.
The new software has a more modern look, swapping rounded rectangles and shades of color for sharp edges and solid colors. It’s also more visual, often allowing you to scroll through the thumbnail images instead of the normal text.
More importantly, it provides a very necessary rationalization to the menu system. The main menu now has three sections of content: “My programs” for recordings, “What to watch” for tips and a launcher for third-party apps, as well as a search function and a settings menu. The What to Watch menu is especially useful, creating a unified TV guide from various channels and streaming services. There is also a band of quick tips at the bottom of the screen, based on what TiVo thinks you might like.Voice commands are also useful, allowing you to jump into the menu system and search for titles, actors and directors. The remote control rarely understood me and the research supports complex queries such as “80s comedies” and follow-up questions such as “Only those with Rick Moranis”. You can also filter the results to show only the contents of Netflix, Amazon or Vudu. The only drawbacks are that the search does not work with all streaming services: HBO Go is an important omission and it is not possible to search within a third-party app.
The TiVo software still has some approximate patches. Transitions and animations tend to be discontinuous compared to modern streaming boxes and the TiVo ribbon menu concept, where thumbnails of images are displayed as you scroll through a text column of the menu, can be disorienting compared to apps completely guided by images like Netflix. Furthermore, there is no apparent way to browse the shows by genre as the results of streaming services are filtered. And the most annoying of all, TiVo always returns to play live TV when left in a menu for too long. Instead it should go back to standby mode.Beyond these complaints, I imagine that some TiVo enthusiasts will be dissatisfied with design changes in general and with some special things like replacing the old dual-pane TV guide with a more traditional grill. But on balance, the new interface is a remarkable improvement, eliminating the sources of confusion and helping the actual content to shine.
But where are the apps?
It is even more tragic, therefore, that the support of the TiVo streaming app is still lacking.
Although TiVo offers most of the basic streaming services, including Netflix, Hulu and Amazon Video, it does not support any bundle of streaming channels, which cable cutters may want to integrate over-the-air channels. The platform has MLB T V, but not NBA League Pass or NHL TV. CBS News lacks live anchored coverage on other platforms, and new streaming applications like Pluto TV and Hoopla are also missing. In addition to HBO Go, the TV Everywhere app is also missing from TiVO. A new coat of paint does not hide the fact that TiVo’s app catalog is stagnant.
The TiVo Bolt Vot is still a big DVR at its center. It allows users to get detailed information about their recording preferences, for example by keeping only a certain number of recent episodes, avoiding standard definition recordings and customizing buffer start and stop times. It is easy to extrapolate programming conflicts through a dedicated menu and, with four tuners in the basic TiVo models, conflicts should be rare to begin with. The OnePass feature of TiVo, which allows you to view the episodes of recording and streaming a show from a single view, is still a touch of class.
But without a vibrant app scene, the TiVo Bolt Vox still does not work as an all-in-one entertainment container for the age of streaming. Instead, cord-cutters looking for consolidation should try to broadcast DVR solutions built to work on streaming boxes, such as Tablo, Plex, Channels and HDHomeRun. Even the current TiVo Roamio OTA is a decent option for a single TV, as long as it is not necessary to switch from inputs when it is time to broadcast.
TiVo Bolt Vox is aimed primarily at subscribers of irreducible cables that may not care about the investment in TiVo’s hardware and services. But as more and more people give up cable TV to antenna channels and streaming services, it seems unlikely that the hold on TiVo is ending.

MXQ Pro 4K Review
I listened to some cool things on MXQ Pro 4K Android TV Box, so I decided to order one and try it. As with most Android TVs, the main ingredient is Kodi Media Center and how well it works.
I took the MXQ Pro 4K Android TV Box from Amazon for only $ 32.49, which is six dollars less than the Fire TV Stick and Kodi works much better on this device than on the Fire TV Stick.
I think the Android TV boxes are a good option for those who mainly use Kodi on them, so my test practically put this small unit to the test inside Kodi.
The Android TV Box MXQ Pro 4K was very easy to set up and Kodi was pre-installed on the system but it was also plagued with already installed addons I did not want. So, I uninstalled Kodi and reinstalled it with a new version of Jarvis.
I installed my favorite addon that transmits a feed of quality live news and that has maintained live streaming for over 15 hours without interruptions whatsoever. During this long period, the unit has not overheated or blocked for which many Android TV Boxes are known. I was pleasantly surprised by how Kodi worked.
Things I like about the MXQ Pro 4K Android TV Box Amlogic S905
- Excellent power thanks to the 64-bit ARM Cortex-A53 quad-core and the Mali-450 ARM core GPU
- Ability to play 4K video very well without any buffering
- Perfect device for those of us who use Kodi for the main application
- Works great with Rii I8 Mini 2.4Ghz Wireless Touchpad Keyboard with mouse
- The price is unbeatable for only $ 32.49
Things I don’t like about the MXQ Pro 4K Anroid TV Box
- Cheap remote control, but not a compromise as you should always use a mini wireless keyboard with Android TV Box as the wireless keyboard Rii I8 Mini 2.4Ghz wireless with mouse
- No Bluetooth support. For those of you who love gaming on these devices and depend on a Bluetooth gamepad, this would not be a good choice
- The user interface is bad After installing and running, I installed my favorite Android Launcher which replaced the default launcher you’ll see in the image below
